Microsoft WPC – 5 days in 5 minutes

Imagine Cup & Microsoft Students to Business Video
The fruit of our presence at the Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2009 is a video clip that briefly presents some of Microsoft’s most valuable academic programs: Imagine Cup (www.imaginecup.com), Microsoft Students to Business (www.microsoft.com/s2b) and Microsoft Student Partners (www.student-partners.com).
The video was presented in front of 9000 Microsoft partners that attended the vision keynotes on WPC’s Day 3. Without any other further comments here we go – THE clip. 
First pictures from the WPC, New Orleans
It is already Day 2 at the WPC. A lot of things went on in the past two days and as you probably expect they are all very exciting. Bellow you can find all the pictures I took in the last couple of days. I promise to return with a post on what happened here yerstarday and hopefully with some very interesting interviews with the Microsoft Product Marketing Managers from Windows 7, IE8, live@edu, bing, Visual Studio and others.
Spending a night in New York
You probably know by now that I am currently in New Orleans attending the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (www.digitalwpc.com) – a conference dedicated to all the Microsoft Partners worldwide.
Travelling from Romania to New Orleans can be pretty adventurous. You will probably agree after I tell you that I had the following flying itinerary: Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Frankfurt, New York, New Orleans – thats about 18 hours of flying and waiting for connections. 
I am not complaining here, don’t get me wrong! I mean I’m a hardcore traveller (i.e. I really enjoy travelling) and I am really happy that I was given this extraordinary chance. Actually the trip could have been a lot shorter if I wasn’t looking to spend at least a couple of hours in New York – a city that was until know a must on my bucket list.
I arrived in New York at 7:30PM local time and by 8:30PM I was out of customs and in New York. My plane was scheduled to leave for New Orleans at 7:04AM the next day so I had 3-4 hours to spend in NYC. I am a lucky guy because before leaving for the US I found out that an old (kindergarden) colleague and friend - Raluca Natalia Chirulescu is actually studying in New York. It was like 1,2,3 to get back in touch and she offered to show me New York in the short timeframe I had at my disposal.
I want to say that New York is just extraordinary. It hit me like nothing before in terms of WOW! 
Really, everything you see in the movies is just there, breathing and leaving. I’m not going to continue on this path, so I’ll leave the photos to speak for themselfs.
Arrived in New Orleans
I just arrived in New Orleans after an 18 hours journey that got me through Bucharest, Frankfurt, New York and finally New Orleans. I’ve been hanging around for less than 2 hours so I can’t say much yet but I do invite you to keep in touch with my blog to find out more as I plan to be very active for the next week or so.
For those of you who do not know I am in New Orleans attending the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference as a Microsoft Student Partner. I was invited by Microsoft to get a grasp on the student opportunities that Microsoft and Partners has to offer.

Ortografia fonetică: sit, site sau sait?
Având contact cu câmpul lexical al Internetului mă lovesc des de dilema scrierii corecte a cuvântului sait. După cum se vede, am scris sait și nu sit sau site. De ce? Singurul argument este acela că limba română este o limbă cu o ortografie fonetică.
Se spune despre o limbă vorbită că are o ortografie fonetică (sau mai precis fonemică) atunci cînd relaţia dintre forma scrisă şi forma pronunţată este regulată, în sensul că dacă se cunoaşte un set de reguli orice cuvînt scris poate fi pronunţat corect şi orice cuvînt vorbit poate fi scris corect. Româna este într-o bună măsură o astfel de limbă.
Într-un sens strict, ortografia fonetică cere ca fiecărui sunet din vorbire să îi corespundă un simbol scris unic, aşa cum se procedează de exemplu în transcrierile fonetice exacte. În general însă o asemenea precizie nu este necesară şi atunci se aplică o ortografie fonemică, în care se permite alofonelor unui fonem să fie notate cu acelaşi simbol.
Cu alte cuvinte, citim cum scriem, scriem cum citim. Se aude “scufie”, scriem “scufie”. Și atunci cum procedăm cu sait? Eu propun că la fel. Și nu sunt singurul.

Dormi lininiștit, Statul lucrează pentru tine
De foarte puține ori am puseuri de responsabilitate civică determinate de acțiuni politice/legislative, însă de data asta mi se pare că se sare calul.
Guvernul Boc, presat de ținta de deficit bugetar pentru 2009 atentează la spiritul antreprenorial prin introducerea unui impozit trimestrial minim obligatoriu de 1.625 de lei pentru microîntreprinderi. Cu alte cuvinte, pe sistemul “Bă dă-mi bani./ Da’ n-am nenea. /Dă bă bani că-ți crăp capu’./Off… Poftiți aici 1.625 de lei!./Ne vedem peste 4 luni fraiere! Mwhahaha…”.
E bine ce se întâmplă? Stau și mă întreb care va fi pasul următor? Se discută și ridicarea pragului de pensionare la 70 de ani. Adică după ce că plătesc ca prostu’ cetățeanul cinstit și responsabil timp de ~50 de ani să nici nu am de ce mă bucura având în vedere că speranța de viață în România este undeva la 68,2 ani.

Cota de piata SQL Server
Eram ieri in oras cu cativa prieteni discutand despre una alta si am ajuns sa ne dam cu parerea despre succesul SQL Server. Am sesizat o problema majora in psihologia umana, daca pot sa-i spun asa. Atunci cand ni se cere parerea si nu avem nicio idee despre ce vorbim ajungem sa ne sustinem punctul de vedere avand ca singur argument intuitia. Tot asa s-a intamplat si ieri cand unul dintre prieteni a inceput sa rada cand am spus ca SQL Server este un produs profitabil, care incaseaza mai mult decat $250K pe an (comparativ cu Progress).
Atunci am inceput sa ne contrazicem, bazandu-ne pe nimic. Ei bine astazi am cercetat putin problema si concluzia este ca Microsoft SQL Server o duce relativ bine in segmentul de piata dedicat SGBD-urilor business, inregistrand in 2007 vanzari de $3.1B, atingand o cota de piata de 18,1% in crestere cu 5% fata de 2006.
Iata si clasamentul general pe 2007:
1. Oracle – vanzari de $8,3B, market share de 48,6% (+7%)
2. IBM – vanzari de $3,5B, market share de 20,7% (-6%)
3. SQL Server – vanzari de $3,1B, market share de 18,1% (+5%)
